Skin Checks Q&A

What are skin checks?

Skin checks refer to skin cancer screenings. It’s a comprehensive evaluation of your skin to look for abnormal skin growths.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. It’s estimated that one out of every five people in the US will have skin cancer at some point during their life. Finding skin cancer during the early stages increases your chances of fully recovering.

Salida Dermatology specializes in finding, treating, and preventing skin cancer. They do thorough skin checks for anyone at risk or concerned about skin cancer.

Who needs skin checks?

Anyone can get skin cancer, and everyone benefits from skin checks. However, you want to make sure you start skin checks early if you have risk factors for skin cancer, such as:

  • Fair skin
  • Light eyes
  • Red or blonde hair
  • Family history of skin cancer
  • Personal history of a bad burn
  • Skin that burns or freckles when in the sun

The American Cancer Society says everyone 40 and older should have skin checks once a year and every 2-3 years for those between the ages of 20 and 40.

What happens during skin checks?

Skin checks thoroughly evaluate every inch of skin on your body. During the exam, your provider at Salida Dermatology reviews your medical and family history, skin health history, and any skin concerns you have.

You change into an exam gown and then your provider examines your skin, starting with your scalp and ending with the bottom of your feet. During the check, they make a note of all your skin growths and the ones of concern. They use these notes to monitor for changes at your next skin check.

Salida Dermatology also teaches you how to evaluate your skin at home. Monthly skin exams help you become more familiar with your skin, making it easier to spot abnormalities.

What happens when an abnormal growth is found during skin checks?

If your provider at Salida Dermatology finds an abnormal growth during your skin check, they remove it and send it to the pathology lab for an evaluation.
